His first experience using a computer, occurred during junior high school with a demo computer that uses a telephone network.

In June 2014, a tumor was found in his bile duct during a routine physical examination.

However, another problem suddenly appeared in early July 2015, and Iwata died from complications of a bile duct tumor on July 11, 2015 at the age of 55.
During his career, Iwata formed a close relationship with Nintendo fans through social media and his regular appearances on Iwata Asks and Nintendo Direct.
Game industry members and fans expressed their sadness at his death.
